Staying on top of routine maintenance will ensure the smooth, reliable performance of your outboard motor. Read on for some expert advice on outboard maintenance from the folks at Island View Marine!

Read the Manual

Before attempting any maintenance tasks, be sure to read the operating manual for your specific outboard motor. This will provide all the information you need to keep your motor running well, including recommended maintenance schedules.

Flush the Motor

After each use, flush your outboard motor with fresh water and remove any salt or debris that may have accumulated. Refer to the operating manual for detailed instructions on how to flush your motor correctly.

Lubricate Parts

Remember to lubricate all of the moving parts of your outboard motor on a regular basis, using the variety of lubricant recommended by the manufacturer. This will keep things running smoothly, and extend the service life of your outboard motor.

Change the Oil

Change your outboard motor's oil at regular intervals, as specified in the manual. Check the oil level between changes to make sure you're not burning through it faster than expected.

Corrosion Check

Keep an eye out for signs of corrosion on your motor, such as damage on the propellers and shafts. If any parts appear to be worn or corroded, replace them immediately.

Replace Spark Plugs

Last but not least, remember to replace the spark plugs in your outboard motor at least once per season. To check their condition, use a spark tester. When it's time to replace them, simply screw them into place, and add new plug wires while you’re at it.
